Preparing for a Storm

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

Be Prepared

Focus on these eight tasks to prevent potential damage to your home and automobiles (siding, windows, roof, cars.)

1. Secure items in your yard, on your balcony and patio area to prevent items from being blown into your home. You may consider removing items for storage or securing. Examples may be outdoor furniture, trampolines or items unsecured.

2. Clean gutters, down pipes and drains to prevent blockages and resulting water from entering home or flooding in the yard and beneath home. Do not park vehicles in low lying areas.

3. Trim trees and branches to prevent falling on home or vehicles during periods of high wind. In some cases tree removal may be required. Strong winds may uproot trees damaging vehicles or home.

4. Repair any damage to roof prior to storm. Additional damage may occur during wind and rain allowing water to penetrate the roof.

5. Review your insurance policy. If you do not understand any terms or know if your coverage addresses potential damage contact your insurance agent.

6. Have an emergency plan. The plan should cover, at a minimum: what to do if all family members are not at home when the storm strikes, how to contact family members, where to meet if the home is damaged, who will be the point-of-contact (hub of communication.) Make sure everyone knows the plan.

7. Maintain an emergency kit. Day-to-day supplies may not be accessible immediately following a storm. It is easy to forget what is needed until it is missing. The kit should be kept in a safe place and stored in a water proof container. Examples are, but not limited to: prescription information, insurance policy information, water, medications, first aid kit, batteries, important documents, flash light, non-perishable food, cash, battery operated radio for weather updates and cell phone.

8. Determine a radio source for weather warnings focusing on your area. Be prepared for the storm by listening to weather updates. Once you know the frequency of updates check during these times.

Note: Some tasks listed may require a professional. Do not attempt unless your are qualified to complete the task. Contact a professional in your area for your safety.

There are multiple occassions when a Realtor, potential homeowner/renter, contractor, restoration company, insurance adjustor or interior decorator may benefit from a 3D immersive walkthrough.

Realtors servicing a potential buyer relocating to may want to "see" their potential home. The convenience of seeing the home via internet instead of waiting to arrive before viewing permits the potential buyer to view more multiple properties. This time saving benefit allows a selection of specific properties saving valuable time.

Insurance adjustors can remotely view properties to determine what services were required and provided. As companies seek methods to reduce costs associated with the claims process the ability to view a loss site via internet increases effeciency and reduces costs.

Contractors can utilize when determing existing floor plans and available options for changes. Validating pre-existing damages and resulting repairs are a valuable asset when property owners are unavailable for a personal site visit.

Business owners and home owners alike can verify contents and structure when securing insurance. Information contained within the 3D walkthrough can be stored for future reference if filing a claim is necassary. Fire damage, theft, accidental damage to structure or contents, storm damage and water damage may neccessatate the need for validating building materials and contents presence. Specialty building material surfaces and high value contents can be captured.

In the unfortunate event of divorce, electronically recording a home or business can provide needed details when establishing equitable distribution of personal and real property.

Previously recorded properties can be provided to emergency response services to determine routes of ingress and egress, reducing time to securely and safely remove individuals. When utilzing remote robotics, the technician can use the walkthrough to assist guiding the robot.

Interior decorators can use for before and after walkthroughs, highlighting improvements. The ability to zoom in on specific points of interest provide a visual effect.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville utilizes Matterport for these and any needs requested by our customers.

How to Reduce Mold Growth

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

Mold growth resulting from water leak.

Mold is ubiquitous, meaning it is present in the environment and is a natural occurrence. The goal is to prevent mold from growing to a state potentially proving harmful to occupants in a building.

When is mold harmful to humans? While there are no current federal standards for what may be harmful to someone, there are methods to determine when actions are required to reduce the amount present. Mold testing is one method. Servrpo of Fayetteville does provide mold testing.
Factors when determining whether actions may be required include, but are not limited to: age of occupants, health concerns, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Before the need for additional steps is required to reduce mold presence, an understanding of how mold grows may assist in the prevention of removal.

In general, mold requires three components. Food, moisture, and temperature. Of the three one is the most controllable. Mold can grow in a wide variety of food sources. It is easy to overlook some as a food source. Mold can also grow in a wide range of temperatures. The third component, moisture, is the component to focus on to prevent excessive mold growth.

Sources of moisture include, but are not limited to roof leaks, water leaks in the home (ice make supply lines, washing machine supply lines, plumbing lines supply fixtures, elevated moisture in crawlspaces. Slow, ongoing leaks may not be observed initially and present an opportunity for mold to grow undetected. Observe signs of water leaks and determine the source. Once discovered, leaks should be repaired as soon as possible. Additional efforts to reduce moisture levels in building materials may be required once water is discovered. These efforts most often require dehumidification to remove the moisture in a timely period. SERVPRO of Fayetteville is prepared to provide these services.

If visible mold is discovered services to remove require trained personal and special procedures. Procedures include, but are not limited to mold testing, material moisture content readings, developing a site plan, and implementing these plans.

A goal for successful mold removal is to return building materials and indoor environment to a condition equivalent to those present before mold growth occurs. SERVPRO of Fayetteville has the necessary staff and equipment to provide these services.

The Thermobil is a great tool to utilize in crawl spaces.

The Thermobil is such a great tool and just one more reason to choose SERVPRO of Fayetteville. Tools can make or break you on the job. The Thermobil is a tool that SERVPRO of Fayetteville has added to our arsenal in order to help our customers during their time of need.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville went to speak with a customer about mold and moisture in their crawl space. The entire crawl space was affected and the mold needed to be removed so the structure could dry properly. The structure being over three thousand square feet was a lot to dry with air movers and dehumidifiers. I know what your thinking... “That doesn’t make any sense! Why would you put air movers and dehumidifiers in a crawl space?!” WELL.. We wouldn’t.

The customer was so happy to find a local company that wasn’t trying to put thirty pieces of equipment in their home.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville was able to save the customer time and money by adding the Thermobil to the drying process.

We saved the customer time and money, but also allowed the customer to spend their time of the drying process, not hearing the beautiful sounds of white noise that come from the SERVPRO air movers and dehumidifiers.

Choosing SERVPRO of Fayetteville allows you to be able to know that your residential and commercial needs are taken care of by professionals that are thinking about your needs first!

We understand that growing a business is about relationship more than it is making money. Taking care of our community through using integrity, honor, and loyalty, so that we can come in and out of your lives "Like it never even happened."

The Thermobil has become one of the tools in our arsenal that allows us to be above the rest so that we can take care of our community better!

Be a Thermostat

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Checking up on the crews to see how progress was going, and Jason crawled back out to say hello!

Everyday when we have our W.I.P. meeting, I always love to start off by motivating our staff. If you have done any restoration work as a technician, you know staying motivated is not the easiest task in our line of work. The customer is usually upset about whatever loss they are experiencing. Some of the customers are a little more picky than expected. The adjusters can make your day a little more complicated also. And on top of all that, now your in a crawl space.

I have been teaching our staff the importance of being the thermostat instead of a thermometer.

Stay with me for a moment...

When SERVPRO of Fayetteville walks into a commercial of residential loss, the customer is already having a bad day. We can walk into the loss and take on the upset attitude and tension around us, or we can set the tone and start to adjust the atmosphere by being joyful, compassionate, and empathetic about what they are going through.

We set the temperature by being a thermostat of JOY in peoples lives daily. You can be a thermometer and let everything and everyone else set the tone of how your day goes, but you will find yourself on a roller coaster of emotions.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville is the best at restoration, we just decided to separate ourselves from the competition by making JOYFUL SERVICE part of our standard operating procedures.

The Importance of Mold Testing

9/29/2020 (Permalink)

Air-o-Cell tests are used to check the air quality of the home or business.

Mold remediation here in the south is a constant job for SERVPRO of Fayetteville. The humidity in the south is always a factor that helps us bring in business. Although we always test for what type of growth we are testing, the importance of testing allows us to inform the customer and our technicians of what they are working with during removal. The testing is the most important aspect of mold remediation. The two types of mold tests are Air-o-Cell tests and Swab tests. Our Air-o-Cell test allows us to check the air quality of the business or commercial residence by showing the spore count in the air quality. Swab tests are performed when the growth is visible and is done by using a swab to pull a sample from the growth. Testing your growth or air quality is vital to making sure that the remediation is done correctly.

Did you Know That Smoke From Candles is Toxic?

5/6/2020 (Permalink)

Candles

The cheapest and most widely used candle is made of paraffin—which is derived from petroleum. When burned, it releases a toxin called toluene, which has been found to cause DNA strand breakdown, affecting the nervous system.

Smoke from candles is actually soot. Smoke is just soot and other particulates carried on the hot air rising off the flame. When you put the top on a jarred candle and trap the smoke, it cools. And, the particulates in the candle settle onto the candle and the inside walls of the jar.

If you notice your candle is burning lots of black smoke, cut the wick. It is recommended that cut your wicks down to no longer than 0.6 cm

Fireplaces, cigarettes and the burning of candles can all result in soot stains on walls. Though soot collects on other surfaces in the home, soot stains are easy to spot on light-colored walls. Aside from being unattractive, soot can create a health hazard.

In general, candles won’t set off your smoke alarm. However, they can cause a fire.

HVAC Condensation Can Cause Water Damage

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

High temps mean more condensation from your HVAC

When your HVAC creates condensation, that water needs somewhere to go and those lines can become clogged quickly. This can cause your emergency line to either break or your drop pan to overfill and that water needs somewhere to go! So what should you do if this happens causing water damage?

  • Call an HVAC company to service your unit. This is probably the easiest and most efficient method, but unfortunately the most expensive.
  • Check to make sure your primary condensation line, usually located near the ground outside the home in an area of high foot traffic, is slowly dripping water when your HVAC is on.
  • If your primary line is not dripping check the secondary line, usually located somewhere like above a window or door as to be more noticeable when dripping.
  • If the primary, or both lines, are not dripping while the unit is on, find a way to flush out or remove the potential blockage. The cleano  ut will usually be located close to the HVAC main unit. Make sure you thoroughly research how to properly clear your lines before attempting to!
  • Check your HVAC unit drip pan, make sure it has no holes or rust around it. If it is damaged you may need to have it replaced.

SERVPRO® of Fayetteville will come out and perform a free moisture inspection on your Birmingham residence or commercial property if you believe you may have had a potential accident. We Can Clean Your Hotel!

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

Dirt and germs that are tracked in by foot traffic and baggage accumulate on your hotel carpeting, accelerating the breakdown of fibers and matting. The clean and classy impression you want your hotel guests to experience is going to be negatively affected by unkempt carpeting. Today, we would like to share a few simple tips and reminders that can help you maintain your carpet to the highest standards possible.

SPOTS AND STAINS. There isn’t really much difference between spots and stains. All that it takes for a spot to become a stain is to forget about it for a while! Any spot should be immediately soaked up with a paper towel or another absorbent material to soak up as much of the spill as possible. This should keep the spot from becoming a more unsightly stain.

PRE-TREATMENTS. Carpet cleaning chemicals can leave behind residue that will actually collect even more dirt. The next thing you know, your carpeting is a dingy mess. Only properly diluted chemicals that break down these stains and rinse clean should be used for spots. Allow your pre-spray to penetrate the spots for a while so that they can do their work.

REGULAR (DAILY) CARE. Regular cleaning, such as daily vacuuming, can vastly reduce your need for deep cleaning when it is done with high-quality equipment. Shop for properly dated filters and backpack-style vacuums, and remember that correctly completing periodic deep carpet extraction cleaning in your hotel is essential to keep carpeting dry, which prevents mold growth. Daily vacuuming removes dirt and dust quickly before it has time to get wet and become embedded in your carpeting.

TEAMWORK. Make sure your team knows how to clean your hotel carpets correctly, using all the established machinery and cleaning solvents as per manufacturer’s directions. The most efficient way to ensure that your carpeting lasts is to establish a routine maintenance plan that is executed by properly trained cleaners.

DEEP CLEANING. Call a professional cleaning company to come in and help you when it’s time for large-scale deep cleaning of your hotel carpets. Here at SERVPRO of Lee & South Chatham Counties, we have the expertise to ensure that your carpets are looking like new in a timely manner.

Have you Experienced Water Damage in your Commercial Building?

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

These issues can leave unwelcome and defiantly unwanted odors in the air. This odor is most always displeasing to customers, employees or yourself. Based on the source of the issue, we have 5 tips to help solve the problem:

1. Ventilate the Building and Evaluate the Situation - Allows any lingering scents to disperse through a window, if possible. You can then work to identify and locate any centralized, problematic scents. If sewage loss is causing the odor, it’s best to stay away from the contaminated water and contact SERVPRO of Lee & South Chatham Counties to mitigate.

2. Dry Wet Carpeting and Flooring - Carpet holds moisture and it could be the source of the scent. A wet and dry vacuum, which can be rented if needed, can shampoo the carpet and then dry it afterward. This sanitizes the area to potentially remove some of the smell.

3. Scrub Moldy Surfaces - Mold growth left alone will continue to reproduce and spread along with its musty odor.

4. Spray Furniture and Upholstery - Furniture can be sprayed and scrubbed. Porous materials are likely not able to be fully cleaned this way since the fungus settles within.

5. Consult Professionals for Extensive Cleanup - There are many instances that commercial-grade machines will need to be used to remove the malodor. An expert SERVPRO technician can help remove problems caused by floodwater and/or other water damage. When dealing with flood odors, most do-it-yourself remedies will fix only the symptom. Trust the help from SERVPRO of Lee & South Chatham where we can assist you to remove most of the unwanted smells alongside any mold growth or other nuisance.

Taking Preventative Measures Against Fires.

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

Spring Cleaning and Fire Safety

Spring Cleaning is upon us! And though deep cleaning floors and dusting shelves are important, don’t forget about fire safety. Below are some ways for you to do some preventative cleaning in your own home.

Replace batteries in your home.

Start with replacing the batteries in your Smoke Detectors, Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Flashlights.

Clean dryer vents routinely.

Other than routinely cleaning your lint filter out before and after loads, you should also be making sure that the outdoor dryer flaps are not blocked by build-up, animal nests, etc.

Check on any extension cords.

Check to make sure that extensions cords are not overloaded as they aren’t meant to be permanently used. This is also a good time to make sure that none of your cords are frayed or cracked. Replace where needed.

Propane/charcoal grills should remain outside.

Your propane/charcoal grill should be stored and used outside only. Make sure that grill is routinely cleaned. And most importantly, make sure someone is always tending the grill.

Clean up leaves and trash from around house.

Make sure to clean up dead leaves and trash from around your house. These items may be dangerous if exposed to heat.

Water loss - DO and DON'T

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

If you have a Category 1 or a "Clean Water" Water Damage at your home or business here are some tips to follow:

DO:

  • Shut off the water source of water if possible, or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet ares of the building, when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
  • Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.
  • Use wood clothes pins to keep furniture skirting off damp floors.
  • Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with carpeting or floors.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

DON'T:

  • Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or electrical equipment  are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards.
  • Leave books, newspapers, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet to cause staining.
  • Leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water possibly causing electrical shock or damaging the vacuum cleaner.
  • Use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
  • Turn on ceiling fans if ceiling is wet, or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Water and Hardwood Floors DO NOT Mix Well and Here's Why.

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage is never a good thing for your home but it’s especially true for your hardwood floors. In fact, one of the most common questions we’re asked is whether or not a customer’s wet hardwoods can be saved. The answer to that depends, but it helps if you understand why it’s bad to begin with.

How Water Warps Hardwood Flooring

When water floods areas with hardwood floors, the material tries to absorb the water. Unfortunately, excessive moisture forces the wood to expand, which can cause warping or cupping. This is why we always encourage water damage victims to extract as much water as possible while they wait for help to arrive.

Saving Water Wet Hardwood Floors

In some cases, we can save your hardwood floors. If the water is quickly extracted and there isn’t significant warping, then we can use a drying process specifically designed for hardwood floors. But if the flooring was exposed to moisture for a significant period of time and shows major signs of warping, then your hardwoods will need to be removed and replaced.

Call Professionals Before It’s Too Late

While it’s possible to save your water-damaged hardwood flooring, time is a critical factor. If you notice water damage in your home, call a professional cleanup and restoration company like our team here at SERVPRO of Fayetteville. We are available for 24/7 emergency services, so if you need help, call us any time at (910)-860-1163

3/25/2020 (Permalink)

With the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus, many people are scrambling to ensure their property is protected. Once transmitted to humans, other humans can spread the virus through respiration such as coughing and sneezing.

How can I protect myself, my family, my employees, and my customers?

Pathogens can rarely be seen or detected with the naked eye; but surfaces, toys, furniture, door knobs, etc are often carriers for communicable disease. When it comes to decontaminating surfaces and airborne Infectious diseases, it’s important to call on a professional that is trained & certified in biohazard remediation including the disinfecting of infectious disease. Surface cleaning is not enough these days, and unfortunately the average consumer does not fully understand the products and the chemical components behind the products intended usage. So many products we use and are familiar with are not used properly, and thus get rendered ineffective which is not the case.

Fire Safety for Kids

3/17/2020 (Permalink)

Kids are naturally curious.

According to the American Burn Association, children are the most susceptible to burn injuries. 73% of all burn injuries happen in the home. At some point in time, children are going to be curious about fire, but it can be dangerous and costly. Here are some tips to follow to keep your family safe according to the National Protection Association:

  • Be sure to keep all matches and lighters out of the reach of children, preferably somewhere up high or in a locked cabinet.
  • Closely supervise your children, making sure that they are away from any fire sources, including lit candles, cigarettes, fire pits, and stoves.
  • Take advantage of any opportunity to teach your children about fire safety.
  • Explain that fires are something to be taken seriously as they move very fast and can hurt you with contact.
  • Teach young children to not touch matches or lighters, and to notify an adult immediately if found.
  • Establish a clear set of rules and consequences about unsupervised and unapproved uses of fire.
  • Remember, children are always watching. Make sure you set a good example by handling fire in a safe manner.
  • Show your children appreciation for displaying respect and age-appropriate responsibility when it comes to fire.
If your children happen to burn themselves, cool the burn by running it under cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. If it is a more serious burn, CALL 9-1-1.

Top Causes of Commercial Fires

3/7/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage to your commercial business can be catastrophic. It does not matter what your business does, it can mean downtime, loss of goods, costly equipment loss, loss of property, or worse. A fire can quickly move through a building and even put your team at risk. If you are not prepared it can be a situation that escalates faster than you are ready to handle. Good planning can help ensure that a fire does not happen or if it does, how it can be handled quickly and effectively. Below the United States Fire Administration has listed the top five leading causes of a commercial fire.

Top causes of fires in commercial buildings

According to data from the United States Fire Administration, between 2006 and 2015, the top causes of fires in commercial buildings were:

Cooking

Cooking is a huge danger, and it was a culprit behind 30,900 fires within the past decade. This is why it is so important to install fire alarms and a sprinkler system in your kitchen to prevent against the worst!

Unintentional and Careless Behavior

This is a broad category. Unintentional and careless behavior, better known as accidents, caused more than 10,900 fires. While it’s hard to stop people from being careless, business owners and property managers can’t afford to be.

Arson

Intentionally set fires represented 9,800 of the total fires in these properties.

Electrical malfunction

Problems with the electricity or wiring in a building caused around 7,000 fires in the past decade.

Heating problems

Problematic HVAC systems are the culprit behind about 6,000 commercial fires nationwide.

7 Tips to Prevent Mold in your Commercial Business

3/7/2020 (Permalink)

Why should you worry about mold in your building? According to OSHA, some mold, over time, may cause structural damage to wood along with damage to furnishings and finishes. Use the following tips to help prevent mold growth in your business.

#1: Clean Out the Refrigerator

It can be difficult to keep track of shared refrigerators. Some people will always remember to clear out their leftovers, others won’t. Old food storage containers are a perfect breeding ground for mold. Over time, mold can travel to the shelving and even outside the refrigerator. Consider instituting an office refrigerator policy. If something is left in the fridge by a certain time each week, it goes in the garbage.

#2: Look for And Repair Leaks

Leaks from plumbing, windows, roofs, and more can lead to significant water damage in your business as well as an increased risk of mold growth. If you aren’t regularly inspecting your property, it’s easy for these leaks to go unchecked until they create a larger, more costly problem. Watch for telltale signs of a leak such as lower water pressure; wet spots on the floors, ceilings, or walls; and condensation around window sills and in attic spaces.

#3: Keep It Clean

It’s easy for anyone to get caught up in work and let clutter take over his or her workspace. However, clutter creates lots of hiding spots for crumbs and dust, which are both great food sources for mold. Make sure to clear the clutter and wipe down hard surfaces regularly. Make sure to promptly clean all spills as well. Clean and sanitize break rooms and bathrooms frequently. Both rooms provide ample opportunity for mold growth. These rooms should be cleaned at least weekly depending on how regularly people use each room.

#4: Turn on the AC/Dehumidifier

Leaks aren’t the only way for moisture to accumulate in your business. High humidity levels can lead to moisture and mold as well. On hot days, fans can cool you off, but they don’t do much for humidity levels. Run your AC or a dehumidifier to cut down the humidity in the building.

#5: Clean out Trash Cans

While you might switch out the liners regularly, can you remember the last time you washed out the trash cans? It’s easy for bits of food and condensation to sneak beneath liners into the can, which is all mold needs to grow. Try washing out office wastebaskets about once a month to prevent mold growth.

#6: Take Care of Your HVAC System

Your HVAC system can quickly distribute mold spores throughout your building if there is a problem. Make sure your HVAC system receives regular inspections. Sometimes moisture condenses inside air ducts or leaks drip onto ducts from ceiling tiles, which can lead to mold growth inside the ducts. Make sure to keep the HVAC drip pans clean and unobstructed. Additionally, replace your filters as needed.

#7: Slope the Ground Away from the Foundation

If the ground around your building slopes toward the foundation, water can accumulate and weaken your building’s structure. Additionally, it provides an ideal environment for mold to grow. The ground should slope away from the building. You should also make sure your building follows the local building codes for drainage. Mold is persistent. Even if you follow all the right steps it’s still possible for mold to grow and spread in your building. Fortunately, at SERVPRO of Birmingham, we have the right experience in mold remediation to make your place of business “Like it never even happened.” Unfortunately, mold doesn’t stay put, it grows quickly. You’ll want to give us a call as soon as you notice it, so we can start the remediation process. Are You "Hurricane Ready"?

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

This time of year can always be scary for anyone who lives in the possible path of hurricanes or may have friends and family who do live in a consistent path. Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over ocean water and often move toward land. Hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents and tornadoes all of which can destroy homes, buildings, and roads. It is important to stay ready so you do not find yourself scrambling to brace for the impact. There is always the potential looming that our area could be hit by a hurricane. Living in the Birmingham, AL area, it can be easy to think you don’t need to worry about the potential of a hurricane. Here are a few things to know ahead of a hurricane if one was to head our direction.

Know the Difference

  • Flood/Flash Flood Watch—Flooding or flash flooding is possible in your area.
  • Flood/Flash Flood Warning—Flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area.

How to Prepare

  • Listen to area radio and television stations and a NOAA Weather Radio for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress or other critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS).
  • Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
  • When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
  • Because standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S. For more information on flood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance Program Web site at www.FloodSmart.gov.

Always Know the RisksTo find your risk, visit FEMA’s “Know Your Risk Map.” Be better prepared for this hurricane season, and learn more at www.ready.gov/prepare

SERVPRO of Fayetteville now uses Matterport Technology!

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

What a Matterport photo looks like

Traditionally, restoration companies scoped projects by sending a technician to photograph and measure a home or business, a process often requiring three or more site visits. For SERVPRO of Fayetteville, 3D capture transformed their workflow, eliminating the need for multiple visits to document hundreds of 2D photographs and manual measurements. Our investment is producing excellent upside, enabling the company to provide greater transparency of site conditions to adjusters and owners. When we receive a call from a customer, saying their home or business is damaged, the company captures the space with the Matterport Pro2 camera, uploads the scan to the cloud, and uses the 3D model to assess the damage, scope the work, and capture measurements. We are now able to produce an estimate more efficiently! By sharing the 3D models with stakeholders, we’ve reduced the number of inquiries and disputes from insurance adjusters, building consultants, and owners. 24-Hour Emergency Service Faster to Any Size Disaster Highly Trained Restoration Technicians A Trusted Leader in the Restoration Industry Locally Owned and Operated Advanced Restoration and Cleaning Equipment Have Questions? Are You Prepared for a Thunderstorm?

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

During this time of year we can experience a lot of rain, which can lead to thunderstorms. It’s important to be prepared and have a plan in place. Talk with your family and create an emergency plan for thunderstorms, floods, and tornadoes. Think about an emergency shelter and evacuation plan. Below we have a few suggestions to make sure you and your family are ready for whatever happens.

Protect your electronics

Your electronics can get fried if they are not properly protected. Plug electronics into a surge protector to avoid damage during a storm.

Prepare for power outages

Have battery-operated flashlights and lanterns in easy to get to places. Check on these items from time to time to make sure the batteries still work, replace them if necessary. Also, think about keeping the refrigerator and freezer doors shut to keep food from spoiling. If these food items rise above 40 degrees for 2 hours or more, they should be disregarded. Call your local power company to inform them of the outage and to get information regarding when the power should be restored.

Stay away from power lines

Do not go near power lines should they fall to the ground, they can be very hazardous. Call 911 if you see downed power lines.

Go inside when you hear thunder

If you hear thunder, it is likely that lightning is also occurring. Lightning can be dangerous, therefore, make sure to go inside when thunder occurs.

Seek shelter

There are many different natural elements which can occur and be harmful when outside during a disaster. Therefore, during a storm, it is important to seek shelter and be safe. If you're inside, a good place to be is at the lowest level of your home. If you have a basement or storm cellar you can hang out in until the storm passes.

Keep an emergency kit ready

Consider putting together a kit of things you may want to have on hand during a storm. Items you may want to include would be water, non-perishable food, flashlights, blankets extra batteries, a radio, and a first aid kit. If you have an emergency does strike your home during a thunderstorm, SERVPRO of Fayetteville is ready to help get your life back to normal. Call us, 910-860-1163

American Red Cross Tips

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Check out www.redcross.org for more information!

TORNADOES

Tornadoes can strike without warning and destroy a community in seconds. Before a tornado warning is issued for your area, here are some things you should do:

1. Know your community’s warning system.

2. Pick a place where family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. It could be your basement or, if there is no basement, a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor. Keep this place uncluttered.

3. If you are in a high-rise building and don’t have enough time to go to the lowest floor, pick a place in a hallway in the center of the building.

4. Remove diseased and damaged limbs from trees.

5. Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.

THUNDERSTORM SAFETY STEPS

Thunderstorms injure an average of 300 people every year, and cause about 80 fatalities. Here are the top thunderstorm safety steps you should follow:

1. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Go to safe shelter immediately.

2. As the storm approaches, take shelter in a building.

3. If you are driving, pull off the roadway and park. Stay in the car with the windows closed and turn on the emergency flashers. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside of the vehicle.

4. If you are inside, unplug appliances and avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Avoid taking a bath or shower, or running water for any other purpose.

5. If you are caught outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground, water, tall, isolated trees and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are not safe.

FLOODING

Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

2. Stay away from floodwaters.

3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

4. Keep children out of the water.

5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

What to do when your Pipes Freeze

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Froze Pipes can be scary!

Lately, freezing weather has finally been hitting the Fayetteville area! The best thing you can do is know how to keep your pipes from freezing before those below freezing temperatures hit. While common during this time of year, frozen pipes are preventable. SERVPRO of Fayetteville wants to offer some tips on how to keep this from happening in your home or business. Below Consumer Reports listed ways to help prevent your pipes from freezing and what you should do if freezing does occur.

How to prevent frozen pipes

Some of the steps experts recommend may go against your better instincts of conserving water and heat, but the extra expense is nothing compared with a hefty repair bill. Here’s what to do:

  • Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall. (If you have small children, be sure to remove any harmful cleaners and household chemicals.)
  • Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. Again, during a cold snap is not the time to set back the thermostat at night to save a few bucks on your heating bill.
  • If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
  • For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

What to do if frozen pipes occur

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, you may well have a frozen pipe. If a pipe has broken, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve, which is usually at the water meter or where the mainline enters the house. If the water is still running and no pipes have burst, you can take the following steps. (Of course, if you suspect a more serious problem, call a plumber.)

  • Turn on the faucet. As you heat the frozen pipe and the ice plug begins to melt, you want the water to be able to flow through. Running water through the pipe, as cold as it is, will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, or a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. As tempting as it may be, do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, a charcoal stove, or any device with an open flame; the high heat can damage the pipes or even start a fire.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. Check all other faucets in your home to see whether you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

Smoke and Soot Damage

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage can cause a long-lasting odor in your home

Smoke and soot can cause hidden damage and odor. Our Production Techs are experts when it comes to smoke damage who can accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a plan of action.   Facts about Smoke and Soot

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke Did you know there are actually different types of smoke? There is what is called wet smoke and dry smoke! Check out the two types below in more detail. Wet Smoke // Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke // Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue // Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire Safety for Pets

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Our pets need safety too

Pets can be considered family, too!

At any given moment, a fire emergency can take place in the Fayetteville area or abroad, and though unexpected; it can be beneficial to already have a plan in place for everyone in your home to evacuate and meet in a safe location. While you should always be most focused on keeping yourself and your family safe, you can also spend some time on pet preparation so that you can have a better chance of getting your pets out of danger as well. You can be better prepared to keep your pets safe during a fire emergency by following these safety tips:

Practice Evacuating

In the confusion caused by a fire, it can be hard to think of everything you need to do right away. If you have a plan in place and practice it a few times, you can be better prepared to handle a fire emergency. This can not only be helpful for pet safety, but also for the safety of everyone in your household.

Notice Where Your Pets Are

An important part of the planning process can be noticing where your pets usually spend their time. It can be especially helpful to note where they hide when frightened. You don’t want to put yourself at risk by spending too much time searching for your dog or cat during a fire emergency, but you can be better prepared to get yourself and your pets out as soon as possible by having a checklist of areas you can look.

Keep Collars and Leashes Handy

Fires can be especially frightening to pets. By keeping their collars and leashes handy, you can more easily guide them out of the house. If you are unable to find them, it can be easier for the fire department to get them out if they are wearing collars. It can be a good idea to hang leashes by the door you are planning to evacuate through.

Top Causes of Commercial Fires

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

7 Tips to Prevent Mold in your Business

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Fortunately, at SERVPRO of Fayetteville, we have the right experience in mold remediation to make your place of business “Like it never even happened.” Unfortunately, mold doesn’t stay put, it grows quickly. You’ll want to give us a call as soon as you notice it, so we can start the remediation process. Our technicians have the training, equipment, and knowledge necessary to help locate and remediate mold efficiently. If you find mold in your place of business, call us 910-860-1163

Professional Water Removal Strategies Save Hardwood Floors

2/16/2020 (Permalink)

Although all structural components in your Pinehurst home can suffer harm after a water loss, floors take a beating. Some recent innovations in flooring materials such as laminates frequently do not survive a soaking, requiring removal and replacement. Traditional hardwood floors, however, are generally more durable, especially if our Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-trained team of managers and technicians arrive quickly and begin water extraction services as soon as possible.

Professional Assessment and Planning
Our crew leads and project managers assess every project individually, planning water removal, residence by evaluating the unique circumstances surrounding the disaster. The quantity of water, length of time since the event, contamination concerns, and migration from the original site are some of the aspects considered. We also look carefully at the type and condition of the materials damaged by the water to determine the next steps.

Moisture Location Devices Clarify the Damage Dimensions
SERVPRO uses sensitive moisture measuring and thermal imaging equipment to sketch out an accurate perimeter of where the water on your hardwood floor eventually migrated. Each plank edge permits moisture to seep down to the subfloor, and water can force its way into building cavities between walls at the baseboards. Once the surface sweep of the water extractors completes, it might seem as though all the water is gone, but the sensors show a different story.

Hardwood Floors Respond Well to Negative Air Pressure Strategy
When water soaks the subfloor, that residual moisture can wick back up, exposing the hardwood surface to the risk of permanent distortion. Cupping, crowning, and buckling are all possible unless the moisture content reduces to normal levels. SERVPRO uses negative air pressure to suction the water from multiple levels of flooring materials. Our technicians place floor mats over areas with high moisture readings and attach the mats to hoses connected to high-efficiency extractors. As the moisture decreases in an area, we reposition the mats until readings indicate the water removal goal is met.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville utilizes technological advancements in moisture detection and water removal to protect your investment in beautiful hardwood floors. Call (910) 4860-1163 to schedule a professional water remediation assessment and project planning.

Power Outages

2/11/2020 (Permalink)

Power outages are common!

Extended power outages may impact the whole community and the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly. A power outage may:

  • Disrupt communications, water, and transportation.

  • Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services.

  • Cause food spoilage and water contamination.

  • Prevent use of medical devices.

PROTECT YOURSELF DURING A POWER OUTAGE:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

  • Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.

  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.

  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

  • If safe, go to an alternate location for heat or cooling.

  • Check on neighbors.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN A POWER OUTAGE THREATENS:

Prepare NOW

  • Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
  • Sign up for local alerts and warning systems. Monitor weather reports.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.
  • Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
  • Review the supplies that are available in case of a power outage. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Have enough nonperishable food and water.
  • Use a thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so that you can know the temperature when the power is restored. Throw out food if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher.
  • Keep mobile phones and other electric equipment charged and gas tanks full.

Backyard cookouts are a fun tradition and grill cleaning should be an essential task to prevent fires.

Grilling season is here in Fayetteville, NC and proper grill maintenance is often overlooked. Grill cleaning can be an important safety measure and key to preventing a grease fire. It is also an important part of creating a good meal. Here are some tips to keep your grill in top shape.

1. Understand Grill Maintenance Basics

There are usually several steps to cleaning your grill after use that apply no matter what type of grill you have. First, cook off food debris by heating the grill for 15 minutes. Once cooled, scrub the grates with a long-handled wire brush, though balled up aluminum foil may work in a pinch. Wipe vegetable oil on the grates with paper towels to prevent rust and food accumulation. Finally, clean the inside of the grill with dish soap and warm water.

2. Take Extra Precautions, Pre and Post Season

Besides grill cleaning after each use, there are a few things you should do each year before you grill for the first time and at the end of the season. One of them is to get a new wire brush each year. Be sure to clean the inside and outside of your grill with dish soap and water and use a grill cover when you store it.

3. Clean Charcoal and Gas Grills Properly

Gas grills have heat deflectors over the burners that should be cleaned with other removable grill parts. The burners can be removed to clean the gas ports. Blocked gas ports can affect the efficiency of your grill. Take time to check all gas lines to ensure that they are secured properly and there are no leaks.

Charcoal grills are often a bit simpler with regards to cleaning. After each use, remove the briquettes and brush out the ash. Otherwise, clean it with dish soap and warm water like you would clean a gas grill.

Enjoy grilling this Summer knowing that your grill is clean and safe. If you have damage that has occurred due to a fire emergency SERVPRO of Fayetteville  is here to help. We are local and available 24/ 7, call us at 910-860-1163.

Common Causes of Water Damage in Fayetteville Homes

Sump pump failure causes significant properly damage in Fayetteville.

Understanding the common causes of water damage related emergencies can help you be prepared.

All households require proper knowledge to prepare adequately for potential water damage in Fayetteville. For example, did you know that the average age of a sump pump is only 10 years old? Some appliances, plumbing and pumps in your home can develop problems, work less efficiently and even fail over the years. SERVPRO of Fayetteville has identified some of the common causes of water damage in the typical home.

Some of these include blocked drain lines, broken pipes inside walls, failing pumps and malfunction appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

One cause is blocked drain lines which can cause significant property damage. Drain lines can handle large amounts of water as compared to other plumbing in the home. In the event that the pipes become obsolete or overwhelmed, they often burst and release plenty of water to the homes.

Another cause of water damage is failing plumbing including pumps. These include water pumps, sump pumps, and sewage pumps, to mention a few. Industry experts state that the average age of a household sump pump is only 10 years. When there is a power outage or when these pumps develop malfunctions or faults, their functionality is compromised which then causes extensive property damage.

The appliances in your home are will probably not last forever and when they fail this can lead to extensive property damage. Washing machines, water heaters and dishwashers are prone to deterioration and can fail. This subsequently makes them more likely to cause water damage.  If you experience a water damage related emergency it is critical that the water is removed quickly and properly by a certified team of experts. SERVPRO of Fayetteville is locally owned and operated and is ready to help you 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

If you suffer from water damage as a result, contact SERVPRO.

Restoring Your Office Building After A Flood

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Restoring Your Office Building and Getting You Back in Business

Workplaces in Fayetteville need to remain clean, safe areas that employees can come to without worry about the impact their environment might have on their health. Flooding from storms or overflowed lakes can create a swamp-like environment very quickly inside your business. SERVPRO knows what your business needs to get back to normal.

When water damage occurs in a commercial space it poses unique challenges. Employees can sustain injuries from flood damage within your office building. Keeping them and your clients safe from harm is an important responsibility. We can help you restore safe conditions by eliminating damaged materials, waterlogged carpeting, wet conditions throughout your building, and the many pathogens that can make people ill.

Removing damaged materials such as wall dividers and other items eliminates a large portion of the water that can keep your building damp and ripe for mold growth. When we remove these materials, we remain highly aware of the risk of contamination from pathogens that persist in such wet substances. We are prepared with the correct PPE (personal protective equipment) significantly reduces the risk we experience.

The first step is to remove the water and dry out the space. After we cut and pull up your office's carpeting, we roll the pieces into small-sized bundles that we can then easily bag up for disposal. We do the same thing with the padding. No amount of restorative work can successfully restore carpeting to sufficient cleanliness, although we can occasionally clean and disinfect decorative rugs in much smaller sizes back to a safe condition.

Drying out your business goes a long way toward preventing extensive water damage, mold growth, and other problems in the future. We use different machines that draw moisture out of materials that retain floodwaters and help accelerate the process by increasing the temperature inside. Heat helps the air hold more moisture, which we then remove from the air with desiccant machines and dehumidifiers.

Cleaning all of the surfaces exposed to floodwaters helps eliminate the last traces of visible flood damage, keeping your employees safe. Odors can continue to affect the interior atmosphere, but we can also eliminate this problem through various means. Deodorizing agents applied in specific areas to thermal fogging techniques do more than mask odors – they actually eliminate the particles that cause the odors to exist at all.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville can restore your business quickly and efficiently so you and your employees can get back to normal routines sooner. We work in the Fayetteville, Hope Mills and areas in Cumberland County, helping business owners recover from flood damage that might otherwise cause their business to fail. Call SERVPRO at (910) 860-1163 so. We will respond quickly to make it "Like it never even happened."

Understanding The Causes of Water Damage | Fayetteville and Hope Mills

4/26/2019 (Permalink)

Severe weather is usually one of the first things that comes to mind for many when the subject of water damage comes up.

Storms and flooding can cause catastrophic water damage however they are often not the main culprits. Instead, there are various items in your home that can be responsible for many situations that result in water damage.

Water damage is something that many homeowners will face, with it being the third most common reason for homeowners to file a homeowners insurance claim between 2011 and 2015, paying out an average of $8,861 per claim.

It is important to know the difference between water damage and gradual water damage, and how it can impact insurance claims. Examples of damage that can happen gradually are ongoing situations that have been happening over a period of time, such as plumbing issues in the walls that will cause damage to walls, ceilings or floors, or water damage caused by cracks in the foundation. Unfortunately, many gradual water damage situations are not covered by homeowners insurance, while storm-related water damage usually is.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the leading causes of water damage are:

  • Plumbing supply system failures. Per IBHS, plumbing supply system failures are the leading source of residential water losses and cost an average of $5,092 per incident after the deductible. In homes that were 16 to 40 years of age, this was a more frequent occurrence and made up a large group of supply system material failure claims.

  • Plumbing drain system failures. This can occur when a sewer drain backs up and overflows into a home or from material breakdown issues.

  • Toilet failures. Toilet failures fall second in line to plumbing supply system failures for residential water damage loss, and can be caused by a faulty fill valve or clogged drain lines.

  • Water heater failures. If your water heater has reached its life expectancy, the tank begins to rust and corrode. This can result in leaking or bursting issues.

Washing machine failures. Typically caused by supply hose failures, drain line failures and machine overflows, washing machine failures are one of the top 10 sources of residential water damage losses.

If your home ever experiences any water damage, the professional team at SERVPRO of Fayetteville  is available  24/7 to help with cleanup and restoration and make it look “Like it never even happened.”

Removing Tobacco Odors From Your Home in Fayetteville

4/26/2019 (Permalink)

The smell of cigarette smoke can permeate a home and give it a stale smell. Thirdhand smoke refers to smoke that settles onto surfaces of your home and they remain long after smoke has ceased. If you have recently quit smoking or have moved into a home where the former residents  smoked indoors, you may be exposed to this type of passive smoke. Smoking also causes hundreds of deaths each year due to fires. Regardless of the reason behind your cigarette removal need, home deodorization is high on your list of priorities. If you have allergies or asthma, cigarette smoke can be especially irritating.

This odor can be difficult to remove. This is because cigarettes leave behind

• Toxic and irritating gases
• Tar vapors
• Smoke residue

Cigarettes produce toxic and irritating gases such as phenol, ammonia gases and carbon monoxide. They also release tar vapors that become sticky. These vapors, residues and gases are able to travel everywhere.

Ozone, or O3, is one of the few home deodorization techniques that actually works to combat this. That is because an ozone generator eliminates odor by oxidizing the air. The oxidized air is circulated through the air just as smoke is and so is able to get to all the places cigarette smoke does, effectively getting rid of the smelly residue.

If you have a smelly home, you can hire professionals in Fayetteville, NC that can help you identify the source and eliminate the problem. Many odors can be removed without a trace. Although cigarette smoke is one of the most offensive and prevalent odors, it is not the only one. Home deodorization can also include pet odors, mold growth, spill odors and other foul smells.

Oxidization is just one of many ways specialist might remove offensive smells. Sometimes special equipment and treatments are necessary to clean air ducts, carpets, upholstery and hard surfaces.

If cigarette smoke is the culprit, all of these surfaces and areas must be deodorized for your home to smell fresh and clean again. If you are feeling overwhelmed, you might benefit from a trained odor specialist at SERVPRO of Fayetteville.

How to Prepare for the Threat of Severe Spring Weather | SERVPRO® of Fayetteville

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

Tornado and Lightening Storm

Spring is here! The arrival of spring brings longer days and more sunshine, but spring also brings with it warmer weather which is sometimes unstable. Fluctuating temperatures that can go from cold to warm in as little as an hour. That temperature changes can result in extreme weather changes. It is important that you are prepared for whatever Mother Nature may choose to send our way.

After studying natural catastrophe losses in the U.S. for 2017, it was found that severe thunderstorms were the most common and produced some of the costliest results. Out of 50 events, there were 85 fatalities and an estimated total of $25.4 billion in overall losses. These storms can bring about flooding threats, high winds and even tornadoes given the right conditions.

Here are some things you can do to your home to prepare for the chance of severe weather:

  1. Clear out your home’s gutters, drains and downspouts.
  2. Trim trees of precarious limbs or branches that could break off in a storm.
  3. Secure or store outdoor belongings if severe weather is in the forecast.

There is no way to completely accurately predict the weather; however, forecasters have the tools available to them to at least give us an idea of the possibility of severe weather. Advanced warnings, along with the right preparation, can greatly improve overall safety for your family. One recommendation is to download a local weather app and set it to alert you in severe weather is approaching.

Having an emergency kit on hand is always advised. These kits should include the following:

  • Battery-operated flashlight and NOAA weather radio, with extra batteries for both
  • Emergency evacuation or shelter plans
  • Important personal info, like telephone numbers of neighbors, family and friends, insurance and property info, numbers for the utility companies, and medical info
  • A first-aid kit with things like non-latex gloves, adhesive bandages, tweezers, sterile gauze pads, aspirin packets, adhesive cloth tape and scissors
  • 3–5 day supply of bottled water and nonperishable food
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Blankets or sleeping bag

If your home or business is damaged in a storm, you can depend on SERVPRO of Fayetteville to get the cleanup and restoration process started fast. Call us at 910-860-1163.

Water damaged floor

Why a fast response is critical

When your home or business becomes a victim of disaster, time is of the essence. When it is your home or business on the line, you don’t have the benefit of waiting for help—you need it right away.

We understand that a fast response is critical, which is why a rapid response to any size disaster is more than just a slogan for us.

Water damage can occur through various ways such as flooding, appliance and/or plumbing failures, storm damage and fire damage, as water is used to put out the fires. In only a matter of mere minutes, water can spread throughout your property, saturating everything (i.e., walls, floors, upholstery and your belongings) in its path.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

  • Drywall beginning to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
  • Furniture beginning to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
  • The beginning of a musty odor

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours and a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping
  • The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination

Water damage left unchecked for over a week leads to significantly increased costs and restoration time and can also impact structural safety.

We’re Here to Help

We will provide an immediate response to any size disaster, which can help minimize the damage and keep cleaning and restoration costs manageable.

Protecting Your Business by Reducing Fire Hazards

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

As a business owner, there will be many safety issues to consider regarding risks to your business, staff and visitors. You should spend a little extra time planning for and working toward reducing the risk of a fire. There are several steps you can take to protect your business which include focusing on fire risk assessment, fire prevention and staff education.

First, you should look around your facility to assess the fire hazard risks. In some areas, the local government may provide a visit from a fire marshal who will help identify these risks and provide guidance on your fire prevention plan.

Make sure that you have the right fire protection equipment in place. This would include an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on each floor.

Last, but definitely not least, make provision for your employees’ safety. Make sure that everyone knows what to do in case of fire by creating a fire plan and reviewing it with your staff. Conduct fire drills at least once a year to keep the fire safety protocol fresh, and take time to review evacuation plans and where the first-aid kits are located.

Despite best efforts with fire prevention, the worst could always happen at your business. If a fire has damaged your business, SERVPRO of Fayetteville is available to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Category 3 Water Damage- Black Water

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

CAT 3 water damage

Have you heard of the term "Black Water"?

In the restoration industry there are three categories of water and as industry professionals it is our job to determine which category of water each damage has. The most severe category is Category 3 which is also commonly called CAT 3, Black Water or Dirty Water. Category 3 water (Black Water) is highly contaminated water that is potentially toxic to anyone inside the dwelling.

The water is considered category 3 (Black Water) if it meets any of the following criteria. Sources include sewage backup, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces or stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth. If Category 1 or Category 2 has been left untreated for more than three days, it is likely that it will develop into Category 3 (Black Water). If your damage is deemed as Category 3 (Black Water), it is likely that many pieces of your property will need to be replaced. Anything porous, such as furniture, carpeting and drywall is grossly contaminated. Category 3 water, although referred to as Black Water or Dirty Water is not always visually black or dirty. In fact, most times it is completely translucent.

If you are ever faced with damage to your home or business you must act fast, find your source and call the professionals at SERVPRO of Fayetteville. We will assess the damage and ensure that it is properly mitigated to ensure your safety.

Here are ways to prevent winter storm damage:

  • You can secure the outside of your house by turning off the water hose, clearing your gutters of water buildup, caulking cracks in doors and windows, and trimming trees that can potentially cause damage to your home during windy conditions.

Preventing Commercial Fires

Fire in Commercial Kitchen

Fire damage to office buildings, motels, restaurants, and other small businesses can not only result in devastating physical property damage but the loss of company time and productivity. SERVPRO of Fayetteville is committed to helping you restore your business to it's prime conditions. However, it can be valuable for you and your business to know how to prevent commercial fire damage before it begins.

Here are the top three causes of commercial fire damage:

Appliances: Appliances such as furnaces, boilers heaters, and stoves can cause fires if they are not properly installed and checked regularly for maintenance issues. Smaller appliances like electrical equipment and circuitry can also cause fire damage if they are not operating as they should be or they are mishandled.

Human error: Some commercial fires are simply causes by human error and forgetfulness. Ensure that all employees know to turn off appliances such as space heaters and switch off microwaves and hotplates in the kitchen or break room. Something as small as a cigarette left un-extinguished can also lead to building fires.

Arson: According to Fireline, arson is one of the most common causes of fires in commercial buildings. Arson is planned and malicious intent to create a fire, whether by a malcontent employee, fired individual, or mentally unstable citizen. Security cameras, fire alarm systems, and keeping an eye out for suspicious behaviors can help prevent arson.

Do you have a mold problem in your home?

3/1/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know that mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Five things that can cause water damage in your home

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can result in the loss of equipment and valuables. Here are the top five things that can cause residential water damage:

  1. Natural disasters like hurricanes, flash floods, and severe storms can result in water damage through flooding.

  2. Pipes and drains can cause water damage if cracks, bursts, and clogs occur. Moisture, bulging, and rusting are all signs that pipes may need to be replaced.

  3. Build up of water on the roof can put strain on your house and lead to leakages.

  4. Clogs in your gutters from leaves and branches can cause blockages and prevent water from being diverted the way it should.

  5. Appliances like air conditioners and washing machines are also prone to leaks. Regularly check any equipment that uses water to ensure that it is working properly.

How to detect mold in your home

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

Standing water and moisture can lead to mold in residences and damage to your flooring, walls, and furniture. There are many ways to detect mold in your home and prevent its spread.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the most common types of mold that invade the home are Penicillium, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Alternaria. Mold can appear in white, green, and black colors and reproduce by spreading spores through the air, water, and organic materials.

If the mold is not in a place that is readily apparent, there are a few other ways to identify mold that is growing out of sight. Mold is typically accompanied by a damp and musty scent, but the smell itself is dependent on a variety of factors that include the type of mold it is and where it is growing. Sometimes it can be harder to detect by scent alone, especially for those with a weaker sense of smell.

People who are sensitive to indoor mold may experience allergy symptoms in the form of a sore throat, clogged sinuses, and runny nose. Mold can also sometimes trigger asthma attacks for people who have asthma.

If you do find mold in your home, be sure to call a professional service to clean and protect your residence. It can be dangerous to remove mold on your own. SERVPRO of Fayetteville offers 24-hour emergency service, specialized equipment, and highly trained mold remediation technicians.

The importance of cleaning your fireplace

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

Many families rely on fireplaces to keep their homes warm during the wintry months of December through February. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 30 percent of house fires are caused by chimney fires.

Chimneys are meant to ventilate toxins and fumes out of the house, but when creosote residue layers on too thick inside the chimney, dangerous house fires can occur. Regularly cleaning your fireplace can help prevent accidents that can cause potential harm and damage. Creosote deposits can also make it harder for air to circulate which means homeowners often use more firewood that burns less efficiently.

Animals like small birds, insects, and rodents can also become trapped in the chimney and further cause blockage to the chimney flue and prevent toxic fumes from escaping the household. Complications like these can eventually lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which can cause sickness and death.

Using a professional cleaning and repair service to clean your fireplace can help prevent house fires and the deadly risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. A clean fireplace can help your home feel safe and protected, especially during cold winter months.

If a house fire does occur SERVPRO of Fayetteville is locally owned and operated and can help. Contact SERVPRO of Fayetteville at (910) 860-1163.

Meet our Team - Cody Matthews

Production Manager, Cody Matthews

Cody is a southern boy who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty doing what he loves. As our Production Manager, he enjoys leading our restoration team and learning more about the industry every day.

Cody is a huge asset to our team with his unwillingness to quit and his go-getter personality. He goes out of his way to do everything his team does and more. He sets a strong example of what a leader should be.

Cody carries those same principles to his life outside of SERVPRO as well. On the weekends, he works hard to help his dad with landscaping and construction projects. When he gets a bit of free time, he hunts and fishes with all his best guy friends that he grew up with in Dunn, NC. Cody rarely rests and we always wonder if he ever truly sleeps. The guy is an expert at operating efficiently with no down time in sight.

As we head into the new year, we get to reflect on the incredible people that we have here at our franchise. We are grateful to have Cody as a member of our team. We truly couldn't be successful without them.

Meet Our Team - Kathleen

9/21/2016 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Fayetteville, we want all of our customers to know how much we care about them. The first step we take is answering the phone with care and compassion, knowing that the person on the other end of the line could be having one of the worst days of their life.

Our Office Manager, Kathleen Emond, is the one who takes charge and informs our customers about what we have to offer and how we can make their disaster "Like it never even happened." Kathleen has been with SERVPRO of Fayetteville for 7 years and has 17+ years of restoration experience under her belt. She has worked in the field and in the office so there is not much she hasn't seen and there is no situation she cannot mediate and restore for our customers.

However, there is more to Kathleen than just her restoration and specialty cleaning knowledge. Kathleen is an Army brat who eventually ended up in Pensacola, Florida where she calls home. Although she loves Florida, her son gave her 2 beautiful grandchildren that brought her to Fort Bragg in 2010 and she has never looked back.

Kathleen and her husband enjoy spending time with their family whenever possible. They also enjoy being active in the local Moose Lodge. Kathleen's hobbies that take up the most time outside of work are camping, laughing, swimming, music and dancing like nobody is watching!

Now that you know a little bit more about Kathleen, we hope you feel more than comfortable calling our office in your time of need. We will take care of you and your family like they are our own!

Online Book Club - Inaugural Meeting

8/29/2016 (Permalink)

There are three types of people in the world:

1. People who LOVE books and who love to discuss them with a group of people who read as much as they do and who have all the time in the world to devote to their passions.

2. People who hate books, who hate people and who hate discussing.

or 3. People who enjoy reading and discussing but simply do not have time to pick up their kids, make dinner, work out, have a social life AND make it to a group that meets in person once a month.

Life is hard and it's hectic, so SERVPRO of Fayetteville decided to create a book club that will satisfy even the most busy person (unless you're #2 on the list above and then there's just no satisfying you with any type of book club).

An online book club is similar to an in-person book club in the fact that a book is assigned and you get the chance to share your views on it once a month. However, the difference is that you can comfortably come to our online book club in your pajamas while eating a pint of your favorite Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

First, you will travel to this link to get to where the discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 12th at 6:30 PM. We are going to be discussing "The Boys and the Boat" by Daniel James Brown. Feel free to buy it on Amazon for $6 here or go to the local library to pick up a copy for free!

Second, we will all have the opportunity to introduce ourselves at the beginning of the discussion. We will then move on to a few thought provoking questions to get our group discussing. It really is that simple and convenient!

I hope you consider joining us! Please contact SERVPRO of Fayetteville at 910-850-4016 or at mm@SERVPROoffayetteville.com with any questions.
